Microschool Founder

Tom Dowell Founder and Head of School, Moreana Boys Academy Tom Dowell is the founder and Head of School of Moreana Boys Academy, a microschool and learning center in the East Valley of Arizona focused on the academic, physical, and character formation of young men. Tom holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento, and a Master of Education in Secondary Education from Grand Canyon University. He began his career in the classroom teaching middle school Social Studies and Physical Education, where he saw firsthand both the strengths and limitations of traditional school systems. While many students thrived, he recognized that a large number of boys were not being served in environments that lacked structure, mentorship, and meaningful engagement. Motivated by that experience, Tom founded Moreana Boys Academy to offer a more intentional and effective model of education. At Moreana, he works closely with families to build Personal Academic Plans tailored to each student, combining one-on-one coaching, small-group instruction, and hands-on learning in a structured, high-accountability environment. Under Tom’s leadership, the academy has developed a distinctive approach that blends academics with real-world experience and character formation. Students train twice weekly in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, participate in enrichment programs such as coding, art, and wilderness survival, and take part in immersive Friday excursions that connect learning beyond the classroom. A mixed-age cohort model encourages mentorship, leadership, and accountability among students. In addition to his work at Moreana, Tom coaches youth soccer, where he continues to invest in the development of discipline, teamwork, and confidence in young athletes. Across both the classroom and the field, his work is grounded in the belief that boys need challenge, structure, and strong role models to become capable and responsible young men. Tom’s mission is clear: to develop disciplined, educated, and virtuous young men who are prepared to lead themselves, contribute to their communities, and pursue meaningful lives.

My son is 9 years old and thriving at Moreana Boys Academy!
The extra-curricular’s these boys get to participate in help my son become excited to be at school! With academics, he is able to set his own pace with his curriculum! Because of this his confidence has gone up and anxiety with certain subjects, like math, have disappeared.
As a mother of boys I’m relieved to have Tom as a coach. Tom’s drive to provide boys with opportunity to become strong men is what encouraged me to enroll my son and I’m so grateful I did!

Moreana Boys Academy has been an exceptional experience for my son and our family. The small class size and personalized attention have allowed him to thrive academically and socially. The owner is dedicated and he genuinely cares about the students’ growth, both inside and outside the classroom. This shows by the numerous field trips and enrichment activities our son has experienced since joining Moreana. The school format provides us with the perfect amount of flexibility and structure with an emphasis on character development. We’ve seen incredible growth in confidence, critical thinking skills, and leadership in our son since he started attending. Moreana Boys Academy truly fosters a nurturing and empowering environment where boys can have new experiences from blacksmithing, jiu jitsu, or the arts. For the first time our son enjoys school and has found some new interests from the group lessons and field trips. We are very fortunate to have found Moreana!

Moreana Boys Academy has been the ultimate blessing for our 12 year old. Between the Friday excursions, daily learning opportunities, and other enriching activities, this school makes learning fun and enjoyable.

My son has flourished in this homeschool-away-from-home environment and for the first time ever, he is thrilled and excited for school.

In the small classroom setting, the boys are able to work closely with Tom (their instructor) and get prompt attention when needed, unlike a large public schoolroom setting. Tom has been an exceptional mentor and role model for the boys and is always willing to help when the boys need it.

My son has found new and exciting interests that he never would have before while attending Moreana Boys Academy. Activities like art class, welding, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, bush crafting, and rock climbing have been incredible opportunities for all the boys attending.

I can’t express enough how much this school has changed our son’s life for the better!
