The Kairos Workshop (Arts, Science, Leadership) is a learning center in Yougstown, Ohio serving students in grades 6th–9th. Built around the belief that communication, critical thinking, confidence, and thoughtful engagement are essential skills for success, Kairos provides opportunities for students to strengthen their academic abilities through Arts, Science, and Leadership. Leadership development focuses on communication skills such as debate, writing, and public speaking, while students are encouraged to express themselves through art, engage actively with science, and strive toward their full potential. At Kairos, parents and teachers work together as a team to support student growth.

My name is Rahman Kevin Smith, and I have spent the last twenty years helping students find their voice. My journey has taken me from Ohio to China, where I taught at Shenzhen University and later served as Director of the Self-Access Language Learning Center at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Along the way, I founded debate programs, wrote curriculum, trained teachers, coached public speaking teams, taught writing courses, and worked with thousands of students from around the world. What I discovered is that success in school and life often comes down to a small set of skills: communication, critical thinking, confidence, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with other people. That belief inspired the Kairos Workshop, a learning center. My goal is to create a space where students can strengthen their academic skills. Kairos kids are trained to express themselves through art, Kairos kids “do science,” and Kairos kids become excellent public speakers, debaters, writers, and critical thinkers.
